Karl served in a Grenadier Regiment on the front. After sustaining severe wounds during the fierce defensive battles against the Red Army in Hungary, he succumbed to his injuries on 3 October 1944 at the age of 20 (Died of Wounds). According to the official database of the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgrberfrsorge, his grave could no longer be recovered after the war; his
